Two weeks ago we headed out to Tybee Island to visit Fort Pulaski, a fort from the Civil War. We thought it would be a nice overcast day, but it ended up to be hot and humid. We didn't last as long as we thought, but still had fun. The fort was surrounded by a moat that contained two alligators. Yes that is an alligator in the background. I was a little nervous about the kids being so close to an alligator, but Scott was sure the alligators couldn't get out. Right after taking this picture I overheard one of the workers say the alligators could get out whenever they wanted! Nobody acted concerned so it must not be a problem.

This is on the upper level of the fort. We lasted through the musket demonstration which I enjoyed except for the heat and the biting flies. During it Maren leaned over and asked Scott when it would be over because she was bored. Martha Ann loved the gunshots but kept trying to knock my hands away from covering her ears. We decided not to stay and wait for the cannon demonstration because it was too hot.
The fort is on an island with some fun paths to walk around. Scott took the girls down to the river and looked for seashells (that's what the girls are holding). I'm always amazed at how huge the boats are that go up and down the river. This boat went by and Scott and the girls had to move up from the beach because it created such big waves.
Next we headed out to the Tybee Lighthouse which is supposedly one of the most intact old light stations in America. We climbed all 187 (I think) stairs to the top. Maren climbed all by herself, but Martha Ann and Lydia had to be carried. The cool breeze felt so nice on top. You could see huge ocean liners out in the ocean. We could also see the beach in South Carolina that we had gone to early. Luckily nobody sees to be afraid of heights and I think the kids had fun.

That looks like fun! I guess you have to take advantage of the time you have there and visit all the sites. It'll be November before you know it!
despite the heat and the humidity, it looks like a good time was had by all! that light house pretty tall-props to you guys for taking your kiddies up that thing...I probably would have opted to stay down and just look!
There are some awesome historical places to see! I'm so glad you are able to get out of the house and see some cool stuff while in Georgia!
Looks like a great adventure--maybe we will have to see it when we come to visit!
