Sunday in D.C.

When my siblings were here over Christmas break, we tried to think of some things they could see that would be appropriate for Sunday. We didn't have church until 3:00 so they went out sight seeing in the morning. Lydia and Martha Ann were still sick so I stayed home with them.

It turned out to be a beautiful day. It was not too cold and turned out to be a good day to walk around.

Maren was excited to be able to go and I think she was actually pretty good. It helps to have a ratio of 5 adults to 1 child. Cecelia's not technically an adult (my 15 year old sister), but close enough.

They took the metro to Arlington Cemetery and walked around and watched the changing of the guard. Maren just kept wondering why it took so long for them to change places.

Then they headed over to the Mall and walked around and saw the White House, Washington Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. I don't have much to say about these pictures, since I wasn't there. I do know everyone was really tired from walking all around (about 4-5 miles) and standing around looking at things.

My kids really love taking the metro to go sightseeing, usually more than the actual sightseeing. The escalators are always an adventure with our big stroller. Standing like this would not be allowed during rush hour. Stand to the right, walk to the left or you will get ran over with many dirty looks.

It's funny how different the noise level of the metro is depending on who's riding. On Saturdays when we take the girls out there is usually a lot of other families and teenagers so it's pretty noisy. But on Tuesday night when the girls were here, Scott and I took the metro to go to the movies and on the way home it was dead silent. I felt weird talking to Scott unless I was whispering.

If you can time the trains right you don't have to wait much. On the weekends there are not as many trains so we always end up waiting about 10 minutes when we transfer trains. Not to bad for the adults, but with three kids, usually not too fun.

Maren looks like she is ready to come home. I think all that walking wore her out.
